David, you raise some interesting points regarding how exhibitors/participants can maximize presence at a virtual trade show. I think you'll find this recent post from Cisco's blog relevant as it discusses the benefits of having CiscoLive physical and virtual (http://blogs.cisco.com/virtualworlds/comments/valueofvirtual/).

With regard to face-to-face interaction, there is the ability to have video chat. This capability isn't used much because of bandwidth and the availability of webcams. However, as more and more computers, especially laptops, come embedded with webcams, I envision this to be less of an issue as bandwidth continues to increase. Once we cross this barrier, while it'll never replace the physical handshake, virtual events can create eye-to-eye contact.

Best,

Thanks for writing. I think we can get a long way without eye contact. Shame we can't improve the codecs so that telepresence can be achieved on lower bandwidth.
